I once made a tree out of a whole package of pipe cleaners entertwined. Then the dollars were wired on for the leaves.
Since he wants a couch, how about make a miniature and stuffing it with the money. You could cut and glue felt if you don’t sew.

They have small singing boxes at wal-mart you could put it in that and still wrap as a gift.
there are really neat puzzle boxes for sell online or in lots of catalogs that are made for money or gift cards. The person has to get the ball through the maze inorder for the money drawer to open.
