How much duty do I need to pay on a gift that has been sent to me from outside Europe ?

gift
djcope11 asked:

I recently received a gift from a friend in Thailand. I have just had a bill from UPS today for £35; £11 disbursment fee, £8.78 duty amount and £15.51 vat. The gift only cost the equivalent of £30. Is this correct ? I’ve received gifts from abroad before and never had to pay anything. Why now ?

As the monkey spanker said, you don’t pay import charges on gifts. It should have stated on the box that it was a gift..x
